Williamsburg cabinetmaker Edmund Dickinson owned a copy of ChippendalesDirector, the most fashionable furniture pattern book of the 1750s and 1760s. When he died fighting for the American cause in the Revolution, hisDirectorwas worthas much as his “new rifle gun”.
